Much like human, dog heart disease symptoms have tell tale signs. We will discuss them shortly.
Just like humans, dogs owners are told to give their dogs a low salt diet. And much like humans, this advice is right and wrong. Yes, avoid table salt in processed foods. However, unprocessed salt will give your dog an unexpected improvement in quality of life. Unprocessed salt may save their lives.
Running and playing helps dogs maintain their health. When dogs have heart disease, it could be causing more damage.
Your dog could have a diseased heart for a considerable time with out any noticeable signs.
When failure does occur, it may appear suddenly and unexpectedly-sometimes immediately after strenuous exercise, when the heart is unable to keep up with the body’s demands.
If symptoms such as easy tiring, coughing, or rapid breathing appear with exercise, do not allow your dog to engage in activities that elicit these symptoms.
Depending on the size of your dog, one or another of the underlying causes of the heart disease may be present. Rather than getting all medical on you, here is the simple.
Small dogs are more prone to getting heart valve problems.
Large dogs are more often to experience their hearts enlarging and then become weakened.
It is important to treat the underlying cause as well as the condition. It is especially necessary to do this before there is damage to the heart.
Occasional coughing, especially during or after activity
Night time coughing
Notable restlessness prior to going to sleep
As the disease progresses, there will be additional signs and symptoms
swelling of the abdomen
notable weight loss
In late stages of the disease progression, breathing becomes labored and dogs tend to extend their heads to improve breathing. Their pulse will be rapid and many times irregular. Unless your dog is a chow or related breed, the gums may be be blue or gray.
These are the most obvious dog heart disease symptoms.
With heart failure, in both humans and animals, blood is not circulating as good as it needs to. When it does not circulate, it tends to back up. Just as when a river backs up, the banks overflow, so too the extra fluids in our blood tend to back up. So the lungs, liver and other organs. It also backs up into the abdominal cavity.
The diagnoses will be verified by you vet through a chest X-ray, ECG and other tests.
Part of the treatment of dog heart disease symptoms includes prevention. One of the things that puts dogs at high risk of dog heart disease symptoms you read here.
Consider this: Why have dogs in the wild not have heart disease. Why have then not become extinct without vaccinations?
Further, consider the side effects of the heart worm medications like Heartguard.
sudden aggressive behavior
Dr. Martin Goldstein believes the cancer and liver disease we see in dogs today is the result of years of treatment with heartworm preventatives. With few exceptions, the dogs in his NY practice (which includes his own dogs) aren't not on any heartworm medications.
Traditional treatment includes giving dogs a low salt diet, similar to what humans are told.
Dog Alternative Health Care Treatments
Most owners are told to make frequent visits to the vet and put them on various medications. In today's economy, many are looking for dog alternative heart health treatments. We have some here.
Please Note: We are not selling anything.
We have found a few natural treatments that will help.
For improving heart function, consider the water cures protocol. This is not just giving your dog more salt. It is giving the right kind of salt, unprocessed with dozens of trace minerals that are essential for heart health.
Instead of heart worm medications that can cause considerable damage on their own, look into food grade diatomaceous earth. It is important that you use the food grade. It is the only EPA approved pesticide and worm-a-side (not a real word) that is so safe, you can eat it, just not breath it. It also works for fleas and tics.
There are a number of natural cures for this but be careful. Things like garlic, if too much is given into the diet, can cause other more serious health problems.
Note about the Diatomaceous Earth: We do not sell it. You can find it in most health food stores. We usually purchase about a 50 lb bag at a time. Of the many farmers in your area, some are bound to use it. You should be able to find it easily on the web.
It also works for humans. In the private practice of one of our water coaches who is also a holistic nurse, it has bee found to be effective for numerous health problems.
One of note, improving fingernails that would normally split. It works just taking 1/2 tsp once a week.
Diatomaceous Earth is on of our "Out of the Glass" ways of improving health.
