The primary drugs used for knee pain are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs also known as NSAIDs. These include ibuprofen, Aleve and Celecoxib.
Outside the US, Etoricoxib (considered as good as other pain meds but is not for sale in the US).
Side effects are where caution needs to be used. Celecoxib for instance, has a 37% increase in risk of major vascular events, which include nonfatal heart attack, stroke or death from blood vessel related causes. Also there is an 81% increase in upper gastrointestinal complications such as perforations, gastrointestinal bleeding and obstructions.
NSAIDs have similar risks. Other side effects include headaches and dizziness and kidney related problems.
More importantly, research is showing that they may only be providing short term benefits. They may be creating more problems in the long term and accelerating the joint failure and thus, increasing knee pain.
NSAIDs inhibit cartilage repair because they they inhibit the ability for the body to create the key components of cartilage, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). These are responsible for maintaining the hydration of cartilage which helps its shock absorbing qualities.
NSAIDs Inhibit Healing Studies have found that anti-inflammatory drugs like NSAIDs inhibit the healing of both soft tissue and bones during the healing process. The damage they do is worse than the benefit of reduced pain.
NSAIDs may inhibit bone formation....(A peer reviewed research paper)
NSAIDs also inhibit cartilage regeneration or the healing and repair of cartilage that is damaged by arthritis.

The question, why are NSAID's used even though there is a lack of independent and unbiased evidence that they are beneficial.
When it comes to bone pain, ibuprofen is several times more effective than morphine for relieving pain. But considering the damage it and other NSAIDs can cause, is there a better choice?
Inflammation plays a role in the healing process. NSAIDs both slow down the healing process and diminish the healing potential in soft tissues like muscles, ligaments, tendons, cartilage and bones. When RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) is also used, there is an even greater chance there will be no healing.

As an orthopedic nurse, I have seen both the traditional treatment fail and the new paradigm work even faster.
The Question: Why Didn't My Orthopedic Surgeon Tell Me About This?In the above study (Hauser), it was noted that people who habitually use NSAIDs need joint replacement earlier and more often. The massive use of NSAID's for the past 40 years is one of the primary reasons for the increase in the numbers of people needing hip and knee replacements.
With out the those surgeries, how will they continue to earn incomes? To be fair, not all doctors are about the money. For most, recommending NSAIDs is not a conscious decision. In our experience speaking to surgeons, they simply do not know the truth about NSAIDs.
Many popular treatments fall by the way side in time. An example, lavage and debridement. While cutting is the business of surgeons, many people like you taking charge of their health and finding better and less invasive solutions. Consider the history of this knee surgery.
In a study by Baylor College of Medicine, the popular surgical treatment for osteo-arthritis of the knee was no better than no surgery (a sham surgery, the placebo).
The surgery involves either debridement (cutting away the bad cartilage) or lavage (washing away the bad cartilage). The third group got a sham surgery. They had the incision but no cartilage was removed and no instruments were inserted.
The two that had surgical intervention did not report any less pain or improved movement than the placebo group.
The placebo group at some points in the two year follow up reported even better outcomes than the debridement group.
While the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in 2002 adopted the findings that lavage and debridement were not very effective, they still promote the use of NSAIDs. Based on the evidence, it seems that continued use will eventually require knee replacement.
The challenge, a quick fix or disciplined help for the body to repair itself. It may take a minimum of 7 days and could take over 120 days.
The question, what if there was a better way?

There is a natural substance in the beet (it is killed when cooked) that helps with several kinds of pain.
Depending on the cause of your knee pain, after the second dose, you should have knee pain relief.

It is amazing how so many things that are new to us were common knowledge in the past. One basic practice of the Water Cures protocol is to drink at least 30-45 minutes before and 2 1/2 hours after a meal. This is not a new thought however. Notice what a magazine from 1925 had to say...
"Drink plenty of water two hours after each meal; drink none just before eating; and a small quantity if any at meal time. Do not take a bath until two hours after eating a meal, nor closer than one hour before eating. Drink a full glass of water both before and after the bath." (Golden Age, Sept. 9, 1925, pp. 784-785)

Hi, my name is Sharon. The webmaster of this site is my nurse, my personal water coach and my husband.
As this site was first being built, I had a headache and as usual took an Ibuprofen. Impatient for it to start working, I decided to try the Water Cures. I took a pinch of salt and a glass of water. Then I took a second pinch of salt and another glass of water. My headache was gone in less than 5 minutes.
From my personal experience, it usually takes 30 to 45 minutes for Ibuprofen to work. Some have found it takes ibuprofen 24 minutes to start working.
