Mental Health Self Help: Background Info

According to research, just over half of people with mental health issues seek medical intervention. What about the other half? They fall into one of two categories.

In a 2013 published article on Spontaneous Remission of Depression, it was found that over half of the cases ended on their own.

Spontaneous Remission Occurs in Majority of Depression Cases This is a number that has held true for the last 25 years in regards to most types of mental illness. The fact is, about half of the people simply get better on their own.

The study found, "....23% of adults will experience remission of depression without treatment in three months, 32% in six months and 53% in a year."

The study also found that children and adolescents had an even greater chance of remission and attained remission sooner than the adults in the research.

Warning: This is not to suggest that it is OK to do nothing and all will be OK. If you or your young one is having depression, it could be caused by something that could be caused by something that you or they have no control over such as abuse of various kinds. Seeking help may save a life, your life, the life of the one you love.

The research shows only half of the people have the spontaneous results. The other half do not. Get help from a competent health care person. You can check them out and find one that you like just as you would with anything else you would purchase. Find out if the professional is a good fit or not.

Mental Health Self Help: Stress and Mental Health

Stress a drain on your brain. It produce reactions which are labeled depending on your behavior patterns. One of these reactions has the label of depression. Beyond just the blues, it is a feeling of difficulty in coping with the stress. Here you will discover how the water cures is an alternative mental health treatment.

Treatment is essential for some because they have a more difficult time dealing with the negative side of life. Most of us will experience depression in our lifetime. It helps us so long as it is part of our growth and development. Yet some have a harder time coping than others.

When we reach the 'harder time' point where we do not want to continue in the feelings, we have choices. We can get medical help, get spiritual help, we can do nothing (50% of all mental illnesses self heal).

There's one more thing...self help healing....we can begin the healing with mental health self help. Help is right in our kitchens.

Holistic Mental Health Self Help

Lets start the consideration of mental health self help with the premise that depression is the way our minds exhibit their reaction to stress. The stress could be mental or physiological.

Can we improve stress management? If we could improve the efficiency of how the brain manages and processes stress, then depression could be easily managed. Maybe depression could even be eliminated by this improved efficiency.

Our mental efficiency has a tipping point with relationship to hydration. Science has found that the point of where the brain can become ineffective is 1% difference in hydration. Where your 1% lies could be between 4% and 5% or 6% and 7% dehydration. It is different for each person. What is the same, the difference is only 1%.

If one percent could make such a difference, what happens between full hydration and and the 1% tipping point. In other words, what if we were just under the tipping point, what would be the difference in mental abilities. What if we were 2% before or 3% before the tipping point. How much better would our thinking or mental functions be?

Many of the functions of the brain require the hydro-electric energy provided by the water we drink and the sodium we eat. This is energy that the brain produces when properly hydrated and the electrolytes are properly in balance.

Consider that balance. Lets start with the hypothesis that the inability the brain to function under stress (mental or physiological) is a state of fluid and electrolyte imbalance (read dehydration).

When the body is in a state of dehydration and lacks the appropriate electrolytes, it is in a stress state. The reaction to physiological stress is the same as the reaction to mental stress.

Stress results in our bodies having an autonomic reaction (think default reaction). This reaction causes further dehydration. During this response, the body releases hormones. To correct dehydration, our body works harder by releasing hormones to try to correct the imbalance.

The body releases...

  • Endorphins
  • Endorphins: prepare us to survive injury and hardship until danger is past.
  • Cortisone Release Factor
  • Cortisone: mobilize the the use of stored energy and facilitates the use of raw materials. If the cortisone response lasts to long, there will be a resulting depletion of amino acid reserves. The body is in effect feeding on its self.
  • Vasopressin
  • Vasopressin: causes vaso-constriction. It causes the constriction of the capillaries.It also plays a part in selectively allowing water into certain cells.

    Nerve cells have a greater number of vasopressin receptors than other tissue cells. While the vasopressin puts the squeeze on the fluid volume, it also allows water to certain cells.

    This process is a more selective when there is a shortage of water (read dehydration).

  • Renin-angiotensin (RA)
  • The RA system is activated when the bodies fluid volume drops. It keeps the capillaries tightened until the salt and water meet the body minimum requirements. The effect of this tightening can be seen or measured as blood pressure.

    It should also be noted that stress can cause high blood pressure. Stress causes the body to use water to help break down stored materials like proteins, starches (glycogen) and fats. In order to compensate for the reduction in water, the RA coordinates with vasopressin and other hormones to accomplish the jobs to be done. The majority of the RA system activity happens in the kidneys.

    When we drink more water and eat salt, the RA system decreases its activity.

    This is one of the reasons people starting the water cures protocol see an improvement in their blood pressure.

Backed By Science

The role of hydration for optimal function has been studied. If dehydration will diminish the mental effectiveness of someone with good mental health, how much more will dehydration affect someone who is dehydrated. Consider Hydration and Cognition, a 2007 study. It reviewed what we know, the 1% difference effect. This leads us to the conclusion that the simplest mental health self help starts with hydration and electrolytes.

The Solution to the Problem

The solution should seem obvious. However, so many people either refuse to, don't like to substitute other things for drinking water.

Since we use water as part of all of our physiological processes, we need to constantly replenish our reserves.

Unlike other self help, this mental health self help only requires that we drink water and take a pinch of salt. The solution is that simple.

Only pure water is designed to be the perfect solution for our hydration needs.

To better transport the water, we need the electrolytes found in salt. Only unprocessed salt provide the right proportions of sodium, potassium and other trace elements we need for health.

Our Grandparents Knew About Mixing Hydration and Eating!

It is amazing how so many things that are new to us were common knowledge in the past. One basic practice of the Water Cures protocol is to drink at least 30-45 minutes before and 2 1/2 hours after a meal. This is not a new thought however. Notice what a magazine from 1925 had to say...

"Drink plenty of water two hours after each meal; drink none just before eating; and a small quantity if any at meal time. Heal Your Headache It Worked For Me

Hi, my name is Sharon. The webmaster of this site is my nurse, my personal water coach and my husband.

As this site was first being built, I had a headache and as usual took an Ibuprofen. Impatient for it to start working, I decided to try the Water Cures. I took a pinch of salt and a glass of water.
